Your DT lessons are grouped into learning experiences. Below, you can find out what you’ll learn in each one.
> Unit 1: Core Materials & Skills: Sources, Properties and sustainability
Scroll down for the links to your learning resources.
After this unit, you will know and remember:
Learning experience 1:
- That materials have different properties that make then suitable for different jobs
- The different properties that materials can have
- Know the different meanings of colour within Health and Safety signs in the workshop (Blue, Green, Yellow, Red)
- Know the meaning of the most common workshop safety signage
Learning experience 2:
- The source of woods and metals
- Know the key properties of woods and metals
- Know what the term sustainability means and why it is important when designing
Learning experience 3:
- The source of polymers and smart materials
- The key properties of polymers and smart materials
- The difference between smart and modern materials
- How smart materials can change in response to an external stimuli
- How sustainable smart/modern materials and polymers can be
Learning experience 4:
- To identify the names of marking out tools
- To recognise the uses of marking out tools
- To determine how units of measurements are used in different situations
- To identify the names of cutting tools
- To recognise the uses of cutting tools
Learning experience 5:
- To identify the two main types of machine drill in the workshop
- To identify the main components of a machine drill
- To identify different types of drill bit
- To identify the uses of different types of drill bit
Learning experience 6:
- To know what an abrasive paper is
- To know the two functions of finishing
- To know a range of different finishing methods
- To know a range of different finishing products
- To know which finishing methods and products are suitable for different materials
You will be able to do the following:
Learning experience 1:
- Match up the correct property to its description
- Give an example of where a property is needed in a product, and a brief explanation why it is needed to function the job of the product.
- Match the colour with the correct type of sign.
- Identify the meaning of workshop signage
Learning experience 2:
- Identify the natural source of wood and metal
- Identify the key properties of wood and metal
- Explain why the properties of wood and metal make them suitable for different tasks
- Define the term sustainability in line with the UN definition
- Determine the sustainability of a wood or metal product and justify your reasoning
Learning experience 3:
- Identify the source of polymers and smart/new materials
- Identify the key properties of polymers and smart/new materials
- Identify smart materials and new materials using their properties
- Explain how smart materials and modern materials are different
Learning experience 4:
- To demonstrate safe working practice in the workshop
- To apply correct marking out
technique to a piece of timber
- To apply correct cutting technique to a piece of timber
Learning experience 5:
- To select the correct drill bit
- To demonstrate safe working practice in the workshop
- To apply correct marking out technique for drilling a piece of timber
- To apply correct drilling technique to a piece of timber
Learning experience 6:
- To select the correct drill bit
- To demonstrate safe working practice in the workshop
- To select an appropriate finishing methods and product to a piece of timber and a piece of polymer
